Katie Western joined the KSN Storm Tracker 3 Weather Team in August of 2016 and can be seen on weekend mornings and at noon during the week.
Katie was born in Michigan and has also lived in Kansas, Illinois, Montana, Missouri and Oklahoma. She lived in Wichita as a baby from ’93-’95, and her dad was the Market Manager for the former Osco Drug stores in the area. Her family originally hails from Indiana, but they reside in Nixa, MO, where Katie calls home. She grew up playing with her three older siblings, working puzzles with her mom, fishing with her dad, and sleeping in between them whenever storms came rolling in overnight. Yes, her love for weather grew from fear. But, being terrified of tornadoes caused her to obsess over them, and this later allowed her to realize the importance of meteorology.
Katie graduated with Distinction from the University of Oklahoma in May of 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and minors in both Broadcast Journalism and Mathematics. Katie joins KSN after two and a half years as a meteorologist at KSWO-TV in Lawton, OK, where she covered everything from tornadoes to winter storms to droughts to floods, and everything else in between. After working in Oklahoma and spending many days out chasing storms and tornadoes, she has grown to love the challenge of forecasting for the Great Plains.
In her spare time, Katie mostly likes to make people laugh. She grew up performing in musical theatre and still loves to attend shows whenever she gets the chance. In fact, she spent much of her time in Lawton volunteering on and off stage for the local community theatre, including acting, singing, dancing, and most importantly, making audiences laugh during her many performances there. Katie is also an avid football fan, obsessing over the Oklahoma Sooners and the Indianapolis Colts, but she loves to attend all types of sporting events.
Whether she gets the opportunity to protect you during severe weather or make you smile on a sunny day, Katie is very excited to join the KSN Storm Tracker 3 Weather team to share her love of meteorology with Kansas. And she’s always ready to learn a new joke or hear a good story, so don’t hesitate to say hello to Katie the Weather Lady!
