WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police have arrested 35-year-old Rachel Hilyard in connection to a homicide Sunday afternoon in the 1400 block of West Rita Street.

A 9-year-old boy called 911 to report his 63-year-old grandmother, Micki Davis, being assaulted by a woman.

“The child was able to grab his grandmother’s phone from the truck as he fled the scene running and calling 911,” said Lt. Todd Ojile, Wichita Police Department.

Police arrived and found Davis.

“Upon entering the garage, the officers located the female victim’s decapitated body inside,” said Lt. Ojile. “Detectives learned that the 63-year-old victim and her grandson went to the residence to obtain property belonging to her son.”

Wichita police arrested Hilyard who was hiding inside the home. She has been booked for first-degree murder charges.

Micki Davis

Friends and family say Davis was a kind person to everyone she knew, and they are having a hard time understanding what may have happened.

“I get extremely choked up talking about her because I loved that woman. We were like brother and sister. She was a buddy to me for 30 years,” said Gene Gardner, family friend. “I think the most important thing to know about Micki was how much that she cared, how compassionate she was. When somebody had an illness or an injury she was there, she was the one with the strength and the backbone to take care of everybody in their worst times.”

Wichita police plan to present the case to Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office Tuesday or Wednesday.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Micki Davis. For more, click here.
