New lights shine on Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS (WGRZ) — As of Thursday evening, Niagara Falls is looking a lot brighter.

A ceremony was held Thursday night to unveil the $4 million dollar LED light, which projects from Ontario across the river and onto both the American and Horseshoe falls.

It’s a vision first created by the Niagara Falls Illumination Board 20 years ago.

“It took awhile for the LED technology to get to the point where it could do what our vision was for the Falls, how we wanted to light it,” said Mark Thomas, chairman of the Illumination Board and Western District Director for New York State Parks.

Basically, technology had to catch up. Now that it has, Americans, Canadians, and visitors from all around the world can now enjoy these dancing, changing lights. The lights are environmentally friendly, too.
