WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW & AP) – A prosecutor says he has filed charges against a Dallas woman accused of killing Laura Abarca-Nogueda and stealing her newborn daughter.
District Attorney Marc Bennett didn’t specify the charges that have been filed against Yesenia Sesmas in Sedgwick County District Court.
Bennett said in a statement Tuesday that the complaint detailing the charges won’t be made public until Sesman makes her first appearance in court. No court date has been set.
Sesmas is being held in Texas on suspicion of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of Laura Abarca-Nogueda in Wichita and the kidnapping of her 6-day-old baby.
Bennett says the state will notify authorities in Texas of its intent to pursue extradition, a process that could take up to 90 days.
Statement from District Attorney Marc Bennett
“This morning, the Office of the District Attorney filed charges against Yesenia Sesmas in Sedgwick County District Court. Procedurally, the State of Kansas will now notify authorities in Texas of the intent to pursue extradition of Ms. Sesmas. The Texas courts will then attend to the extradition process. This process is expected to take up to 90 days. At such time as Ms. Sesmas is returned to the Sedgwick County jail, a first appearance will be held on the charges now filed. At that time the charging document which details the charges will be made available to the media. Note that all persons accused of any crime retain the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.”
