Wichita State Women’s Basketball Falls 56-54 to UMKC

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW)  –  UMKC scored with one second remaining to hand Wichita State a 56-54 loss on Tuesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers came back from as much as 14 in the fourth quarter to tie it with 54 seconds left but UMKC’s Kiana Law scored a contested layup – her only basket on the night – with four seconds left to clinch the victory for the Kangaroos.

WSU was led in scoring by Rangie Bessard‘s 20 points while freshman Kayla Williams backed her with 17 points. Keke Thompson contributed with five points, six assists, nine rebounds and a block.

Samantha Waldron led the scoring effort for the Kangaroos with 22 points on 7-11 shooting. Aries Washington added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Kristen Moore also reached double-digits with 11 points.

WSU opened the game with an 8-6 lead into the first media timeout with five points from Bessard and three from Thompson at 4:42. Williams made it 11-7, WSU, with a three at 4:15. UMKC then capped a 6-0 run to take its first lead, 13-11 at the :46 mark with a three by Waldron, then a Shocker foul at the buzzer gave the Roos two free throws by Barrett and a 15-11 lead with one tenth of a second on the clock in the first quarter.

After the first quarter, UMKC continued the run with two more baskets as the Roos’ zone helped WSU to miss 11-straight shots before Bessard powered in a layup, got the fouled at the 5:33 mark, and made the free throw, to cut UMKC’s lead to 21-14. Stovall then cut the lead to 21-17 with a three from the right baseline, then after a Shocker steal, got fouled and made one from the line to put the deficit at three, 21-18. A 7-3 Roos’ run gave the visitors a 28-21 lead before Bessard hit a basket at the halftime buzzer to cut into the UMKC lead again, 28-23.

At the half, Bessard led all scorers with 11 points, while Waldron led the Roos with nine points. UMKC out-shot the Shockers, 47.8 percent (11-23) to 26.7 percent (8-30).

UMKC opened the third-quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 38-30 lead at 5:04 on two free throws before a Waldron three at 1:53 gave the Roos an 11-point lead, 41-30 and extended the run to 13-2. UMKC out-scored WSU, 16-9 in the third quarter, to take a 44-32 lead into the final frame.

The Shockers cut the lead to three, 46-43, on a Williams trey at 6:22, but the Roos answered with back-to-back baskets to push the lead back to 51-45. The two teams traded baskets before a steal and layup by WSU’s Mike cut the lead to three again, 52-49.

Williams struck again with a trey at 1:54 from the right baseline to tie the game for WSU before UMKC went ahead, 53-52, when Aries Washington made one of two free throws.

UMKC missed one of two free throws with 18 second left to go up two, 54-52, before Thompson made two free throws to tie the game at 54-all with nine seconds left before Law’s game-winning layup.

Wichita State is next in action 5 p.m., Nov. 20 at Texas-Arlington in the College Park Center.
