GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) – Garden City Community College’s football team is ranked #1 in the nation among junior college football teams, and today they had an exciting announcement.
“I’m proud to tell you that our football team is going to represent us in a national championship bowl,” said John Green, the college’s athletic director. “That bowl will be in Arizona and will be the El Toro Bowl.”
The Broncbusters will face off against number two Arizona Western.
“Well, it’s exciting,” said head coach Jeffrey Sims. “This is the fifth one that I’ve coached in, but I know how hard our players have worked, so it’s cool to see them get the rewards that they earned.”
It’s a point of pride for the college. Coach Sims says it costs the school more to compete in a bowl game than they could earn from a payout.
“This isn’t like if you’re at KU and you go to a bowl game there’s a windfall of money that comes in,” said Sims. “Where it affects the school financially is it just shows the success that we have on this campus.”
Coach Sims credits the players for their tireless work in pushing the team this far.
“Last year was our first year,” said Sims, “and we tried to set the foundation. There were a couple of times last year that we made decisions that we thought would help us long-term.”
The Broncbusters ended their season undefeated, with a 10-0 record. They play December 3 in Yuma, Arizona.
