WELLINGTON, Kan. (KSNW) – A fire at the power plant has left the city of Wellington without electricity. The fire started at 12:30 p.m. at the plant in the 500 block of Blaine.

Mayor Shelley Hansel said a squirrel got into the main transformer at the city’s power plant.

This squirrel caused a large fire and has knocked the power out to the entire city.  Fire crews have extinguished the fire, and the city is in the process of starting the backup gas turbine generator. It will take a couple of hours to get up and running.
