WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Wichita State men’s basketball team defeated Augusta 73-67 in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at Koch Arena.
Shaq Morris led the way for WSU with a team-high 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting. He had just one foul in the victory.
Augusta’s Keshun Sherrill led all scorers with 33 points.
After the game, Wichita State coach Greg Marshall said, “Augusta’s a very good team with an All-American.” Marshall added, “The positives are we were able to execute with the game on the line.”
The Division II Jaguars hit 9-of-11 three-pointers over a 12-minute stretch to a cut a 22-point WSU lead down to a single point with 4:01 to go.
Shaq Morris said, “We kind of lost our focus a little bit, our team we actually have a problem with getting a great lead, we’ll play great at first but we always seem to let people get back, that’s something we are willing to fix and we’ve got another five six days before we play again, we’ve got to fix that.”
Morris’ 24 points marked the highest exhibition output by a Shocker in 10 seasons under Marshall.
A total of 13 Shockers played, and 12 of them scored. WSU shot 50.9 percent as a team and out-rebounded the visitors 38-27.
The Shockers open the regular season next Friday against MEAC preseason runner-up pick South Carolina State.
