Wichita State Men’s Basketball receiving votes in the preseason AP Poll

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State begins the 2016-17 men’s basketball season sitting just outside the top-25. The Shockers picked up 21 votes in the Monday’s Associated Press preseason poll for the equivalent of a No. 34 national ranking.

Two weeks ago, WSU earned 15 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll, good for 37th overall.

Though the Shockers (26-9 last year, 16-2 MVC) will open without a national ranking for the first time since the 2012-13 season, they still earned a degree of respect from the voters, who weighed WSU’s recent track record under Gregg Marshall favorably against the loss of Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet to the NBA.

WSU has earned a vote in either the AP or Coaches in all but six of the last 99 poll weeks, dating back to Dec. 12, 2011.

The Shockers host Augusta University in exhibition play this Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. and open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 against South Carolina State.

Both games will be carried statewide on Cox Channel Kansas (Cox HD 2022) with streaming beyond the Kansas borders on ESPN3. Fans can also catch the games on radio on KEYN (103.7 FM) and online at GoShockers.com/Listen.
