TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is distancing himself from Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claim of widespread election fraud while continuing to back the Republican presidential nominee.
The GOP governor said Monday that he has faith in the election system. Trump has claimed without producing evidence that “large-scale” fraud is occurring.
Brownback said he doesn’t doubt there are irregularities in some places but added, “I’ve been on the ballot a lot, and I think overall the system operates well.”
Brownback said the crucial issue in the presidential election is filling a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a strong abortion opponent and conservative on social issues.
The Kansas governor also said Democrat Hillary Clinton would greatly expand the regulatory state.
