What is your plan to deal with the Kansas Budget?
We must reverse the personal income tax exemption for more than 330,000 business owners, who also enjoy the benefits of tax-payer funded services that the rest of us pay for. It has not lead to job creation or economic prosperity; instead, it has caused deep and devastating cuts to education and other essential state services, and the largest sales tax increase in state history. To fill the budget hole caused by the 2012 tax plan, the burden should not be solely placed upon the less affluent. Everyone must pay their fair share.
What kind of changes do you support in rewriting the school funding formula? Do you support additional funding for Kansas schools?
Before the block grant funding, we had a constitutionally reliable formula for allocating funds based upon individual student needs. It was irresponsible to scrap a plan before an alternate was in place. We should return to the prior formula, and fund it appropriately. It is much easier to make adjustments, when needed, to a good plan than to start over from scratch.
What is your number one priority for the upcoming legislative session and how do you plan to address it?
My priority is to reverse the 2012 tax exemptions, which primarily benefits high-income families and poses a serious threat to our state’s long-term economic viability. Only then can we address the revenue problem that has led to severe cuts to education, healthcare and other services.
