What is your plan to deal with the Kansas Budget?

The answer is simple: we cannot continue to spend more than we bring in. We need to start balancing the budget without using one-time money, fund sweeps and borrowing from KDOT and KPERS. We must ensure essential services are funded like law enforcement and public safety.

What kind of changes do you support in rewriting the school funding formula? Do you support additional funding for Kansas schools?

The legislature has a constitutional obligation to fund our schools, and it needs to fulfill that obligation. Specifically, we need to replace the block grant system with a fair and balanced school funding formula. Yes, I support funding for Kansas schools and more local control. Our schools can operate best when the decisions are being made at the local level by parents, teachers and our local school boards.

What is your number one priority for the upcoming legislative session and how do you plan to address it?

Finances are the biggest issue facing our state right now. Getting 165 legislators and a Governor to agree to that is the more challenging part. But, I know what it takes because I’ve done it. I served two years as chair as the Senate budget committee, and during that time we balanced the budget and reduced overall spending by $1.5 billion.

It’s time to get Kansas back to basics. We need to balance the budget and ensure essential services are funded. We need to develop a fair and balanced tax code to provide certainty to Kansas families and local businesses. We need to fund our local schools and ensure every child gets a good education.
