The latest from court about 3 accused of plotting Kansas attack

WICHITA, Kan. (KSN) – Monday in a Wichita federal courtroom, Curtis Wayne Allen, Patrick Eugene Stein and Gavin Wright each made their first court appearance.

Before Magistrate Judge Gwynne Birzer entered the courtroom the men appeared relaxed, discussing with their court-appointed attorneys.

The proceedings themselves were short.

The official charge of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction was read individually to each of the suspects. They did not enter a plea.

Court documents allege the men were planning to detonate four truck bombs at a Garden City apartment complex, where many Somali Muslim immigrants live.

The criminal complaint says the men were hoping to set off an explosion to “wake people up” and had started stockpiling weapons. The judge ordered the men to remain in the custody of U.S. Marshals saying if released, they could pose a danger to the community.
