WICHITA, Kan. – – Wichita firefighters were busy battling a couple of fires Wednesday evening.
The first happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 600 block of South Laura, in south Wichita.
When crews arrived they found heavy flames coming from the back of the house.
Wichita Fire Battalion Chief John Turner says while they were fighting the fire, the roof of the home collapsed.
Turner says this caused firefighters to retreat and battle the flames from outside.
It took nearly 40 firefighters about 45 minutes to get the fire under control.
Turner says the home was abandoned and that there were no working utilities to the home.
“Abandoned structures are a source of arson fires and if you do have an abandoned structure we strongly advise that it’s your responsibility to keep it concealed, keep it boarded up and keep the kids out,” said Turner.
Neighbors say they saw two kids running from the house before the fire started.
Firefighters say this is the second fire at the home in the past two weeks.
