WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police released a few new details after a woman was killed after being shot Saturday. It happened at the Water’s Edge Apartments in the 400 block of West Central.
On Monday, police identified the victim as 55-year-old Donna O’Neal. Police said the suspect forced entry into the woman’s apartment. Someone called 911 to report the shooting. When officers arrived, O’Neal was transported to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition. She later died.
“We are still investigating the motive and relationship. I can’t comment on where we are on that at this time,” said Lt Jason Stephens, Wichita Police Department. “We do have witnesses to the crime. I’m not going to comment on how many witnesses.”
Friends of the victim remember her as a kind and giving woman.
“She was a bubbly sort of person. She smiled a lot,” said Sabu Black. “She was a good person to me. I mean, I don’t know who she was or what she was to anybody else but to me she was a good person and good people are hard to find nowadays.”
Black says he knew her for a few months, but even in that short time, her nature was apparent, noting how she cooked meals for him on more than one occasion after he had back surgery.
He says he hopes to see the right person behind bars.
“That’s just justice. You know, as long as they find the right person,” Black said. “I don’t know who that would be.”
Police are searching for the suspect and asking for assistance from the public in the case.
“My advice is to be vigilant of your surroundings and report suspicious activity to police if you see any,” added Stephens.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 267-2111 or 911.
