(NBC News) – The new Apple iPhone 7 is flying off the shelves.

Thousands camped out overnight to get their hands on the phone, while rival Samsung is asking customers to keep their hands off the new Galaxy Note-7 because of a potentially dangerous problem with that phone’s battery.

After numerous reports of the phone catching fire, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a formal government recall, saying the phones pose an immediate risk of fire and should not be used.

Samsung says the fires are the result of defective lithium-ion batteries.

The company is the world’s largest cell phone manufacturer and the recall affects roughly a million Galaxy Note 7s in the United States, 2.5-million globally.
