WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police released new information in a woman’s death. It happened in the 100 block of South Muirfield on Thursday.
Lt. Todd Ojile said shortly before 7 a.m., relatives of the suspect who live in Texas had received texts and photos that a woman had been shot and killed.
Police went to a home in the 9800 block of West 2nd Street. They were unable to make contact with anyone inside.
Police put out a BOLO for the woman’s car. The officers were able to find the car at her parents home in the 100 block of South Muirfield.
“A short time later, a 41-year-old man exited the residence through the front door. He was holding a handgun. He was ordered to drop the gun which he threw in the yard,” said Lt. Todd Ojile.
Police found the 42-year-old woman dead in the hallway. She was identified by police as Melissa Englert.
Lt. Todd Ojile said the suspect and the woman were dating for about eight to nine months. Police said several calls were made on them in the last several months.
“There had been several calls made on them at the residence on 2nd Street whether they were arguing or fighting throughout the last two months,” added Ojile.
Wednesday night, the two went to the parent’s home to get the mail.
“During this time, an argument ensued. A handgun was retrieved inside the residence. Ms. Englert was shot and killed,” said Lt. Ojile.
The suspect was booked into the jail on one count of first-degree murder. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office on Monday.
According to Sedgwick County jail booking sheets, the suspect is identified as 41-year-old Jonathan M. Perret.
