TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) –  Authorities have cleared the scene involving a suspicious vehicle late Wednesday morning in downtown Topeka.

Topeka police blocked off Kansas Avenue between 5th and 6th streets while they investigated a suspicious package inside a car.

Police tell KSNT News an individual attempted to surrender to law enforcement items which were potentially explosive in nature.

The individual spoke with personnel at the FBI’s Topeka Office and notified them the items in question were located in his vehicle parked outside of the building.  Acting with caution, law enforcement secured the area and encouraged any occupants in the area to relocate temporarily.

The items were retrieved from the individual’s car by members of the Topeka Police Department and Metropolitan Topeka Airport Bomb Squads, FBI, and ATF.

Police say the individual in question does not appear to have been motivated by malice, but was attempting to discard these items by surrendering them to law enforcement.

The FBI cautions the public in the transporting or handling of these items, but encourages the public to contact area law enforcement immediately for proper disposal.
