Woman dies in southeast Wichita apartment fire

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – One woman has died after an apartment fire in southeast Wichita. It happened at the Buttonwood Tree Apartment complex in the 9200 block of East Harry.  That is near Harry and Webb.

A maintenance person first smelled smoke and called the fire department.

When fire crews arrived, they did not find an obvious fire, so they had to go searching through the complex. They found a fire contained to one apartment on the second floor.

“They exited their rigs and started walking through the courtyards located the apartment from the ground, redirected and was able to initiate the fire attack,” said Battalion Chief Matt Bowen, Wichita Fire Department.

Investigators say the person who died in the fire was a woman in her 70s.  Her name has not been released.

Officials say the fire caused about $13,000 in damage to the apartment. Two cats also died.

The Wichita Fire Department says this the second fire fatality of the year in Wichita. The first fire fatality was back in February.
