WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A young Wichita girl is showing her appreciation for local law enforcement by doing what she can to thank the men and women in blue.
She’s tiny, but Ellie Cotton is mighty. The 3-year-old has her own police hat and plastic handcuffs. She is prepared to fight crime in her south Wichita neighborhood as long as she’s not taking a nap.
“I want to be an officer when I grow up,” said Ellie.
Until then, Ellie is giving back to local law enforcement. She has started ‘Pop for Cops.’
“Last Sunday when we went for a walk, she had told me she was sad for officers,” said Ellie’s mom Courtney Hess.
Hess said Ellie wanted to do something to make the officers feel appreciated.
“So she went to her piggy bank and got $5 out, so we went to Walmart and we bought pop and water and cookies,” Hess said.
Sunday evening, Ellie sat outside her house with the drinks and waited for officers to arrive. On Tuesday afternoon, Ellie opened up for business again.
A Wichita police officer and four Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputies came to see her. Ellie asked the officer and the deputies what they would like to drink, then retrieved it for them.
“This was the best call all day,” said the Wichita police officer.
“It makes you feel good knowing you have a daughter who loves to go and give them, give back to them, make them happy,” Hess said.
After the WPD officer got his drink, he showed Ellie around his police unit. One of the deputies then gave Ellie a badge of her own. Sporting it proudly, Ellie smiled and thanked the officers for their service.
Hess said Ellie plans to do ‘Pop for Cops’ every weekend for the rest of the summer.
