Hutchinson man arrested for fatal Great Bend crash

GREAT BEND, Kan. (KSNW) – A Hutchinson man has been arrested for a fatal crash that happened May 15th in Barton County.

Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the pickup involved in the crash was northbound approaching the Barton/Stafford County line when it missed a turn, went into a skid, left the roadway and rolled about three-and-one-half times.

Officials were originally told that the victim, 20-year-old Jacob D. Kinney of Great Bend, was driving. The crash investigation later revealed that he wasn’t.

Dakota James, 20, was initially identified as the passenger. After an investigation, it is believed that James was operating the truck at the time of the crash.

James was arrested May 31st in Udall, Kansas for eight counts, including involuntary manslaughter, DUI, giving false information to law enforcement officers as well as various other traffic charges.

The KBI assisted the Barton County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation.
