Winfield motorcycle driver dies after crashing into cow

DEXTER, Kan. (KSNW) – A man driving a motorcycle in Cowley County was killed when his vehicle hit a cow Saturday night.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. on K-15 Highway about two miles north of Dexter.

The highway patrol said a 1997 Honda motorcycle with two people was northbound on K-15 when the driver struck a cow that was standing in the roadway. The driver lost control of the vehicle and drove into the west ditch. The passenger on the motorcycle was ejected and the driver stayed with the bike until it came to rest.

The patrol identified the driver as 46-year-old Todd C. Gritzmaker of Winfield. He was taken to William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield where he later died.

The 48-year-old woman was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita in serious condition.

Neither the driver or the passenger was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
