Former ‘American Idol’ contestant with Wichita ties killed in Oklahoma crash

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP & KSNW) – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says one person was killed in a wrong-way crash early Friday on Interstate 240 in Oklahoma City.

The eastbound interstate was shut down for several hours after the 3 a.m. crash. The highway patrol said in a report that 36-year-old Rickey E. Smith Jr. of Oklahoma City died after a truck driving the wrong direction on Interstate 240 crashed head-on into his car.

The driver of the truck was treated and released from an Oklahoma City hospital. The fatal crash remains under investigation.

Smith appeared on season 2 of “American Idol” on Fox. Clay Aiken took to Twitter to express his sadness. Ruben Studdard made a post to Instagram.

Rickey Smith has ties to the Wichita area.
