Southpaw Reed returns to Wichita

WICHITA, Kan.  – The Wingnuts added yet another familiar face Wednesday, re-signing left-hander Frankie Reed for the 2016 season, making him the 13th player on the current roster that has suited up previously for Wichita.

Selected in the 27th round of the 2011 draft by the Florida Marlins out of Cal Poly, Reed began his professional career with the rookie-level GCL Marlins that summer, but quickly advanced to Jamestown, the Marlins short-season A affiliate.

After splitting time between Jamestown and the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2012, Reed began 2013 as the closer for the Grasshoppers and excelled. In 36 outings, Reed posted a 5-0 record and a microscopic 0.60 ERA while collecting 12 saves. His performance earned him a promotion to High-A Jupiter, where he posted a 0.75 earned run average in 10 relief appearances over the remainder of the campaign.

In 2014, Reed reached Double-A Jacksonville for the first time. After striking out nearly a batter per inning with the Suns, the lefty began last season with them as well, but was released from the organization in June. In his five years with the Florida/Miami organization, Reed posted an overall record of 17-4 with a 2.81 ERA and 17 saves.

Upon his release from the Marlins, Reed signed with the Wingnuts on June 27 of last year. The left-hander pitched in 21 contests for Wichita over the remainder of the campaign, and posted a 3.00 earned run average while striking out 20 in 18.0 innings of work.

Reed is the 24th player to sign with the Wingnuts for the upcoming season. During the pre-season, a maximum of 28 players may be under contract with the team. The active roster must be trimmed to 23 two days before the start of the regular season.
