5 hurt in crash in Russell County

RUSSELL COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) – Five people were hurt in a crash in Russell County on Thursday morning. It happened around 7:10 a.m on Highway 281 approximately a mile north of the Barton, Russell County line.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix was southbound on Highway 281 and went left of the center line striking a 2011 Chevy pickup that was northbound. Officials say the pickup entered the east ditch and rolled at least two times.

The driver of the Grand Prix, 19-year-old Bryan S. Hladik, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.  Eighteen-year-old Larry W. Bell, a passenger in the car was taken to Russell County Hospital.  A second passenger, 18-year-old David R. Devereaux, was taken to Via Christi St. Francis hospital in Wichita.  All three were from Enid, Oklahoma.

The driver and passenger of the Chevy pickup, identified as 54-year-old Clarence R. Messick of St. John, was taken to the Russell County Regional Hospital.   His 38-year-old passenger, Shawn A. Ernst of Byers, was taken to Salina Regional Hospital.
