WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police are investigating after a 5-year-old girl almost drown while attending a pool party this weekend. It happened at a hotel in the 6000 block of West Kellogg Saturday afternoon.

“The 10 and the 9-year-old are the ones that got the child out of the pool,” says Wichita Police Lt. Steve Kenney. “Suspects were a 44-year-old female and a 74-year-old white male.”

Kenney says a 5-year-old girl was found at the bottom of the pool, unresponsive.

“A 10 and a 9-year-old who were also attending the pool party noticed that the 5-year-old was unconscious at the bottom of the pool and removed her from the pool,” says Kenney. “At this time our two suspects then administered some form of life-saving measures, that were successful.”

Lt. Kenney says 911 was not called right away.

Officials received a 911 call from St. Joseph Hospital, at least two hours later. The mother said her daughter and other kids were attending a pool party when she received a call that her daughter almost drowned. The mother picked up the child and took her to the hospital.

The hospital contacted police because of inconsistencies with time of the drowning and when the girl arrived at the hospital.

The Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit is looking into the case. Officials with EMCU say they could have more interviews and they will present their findings to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office to see if charges of aggravated child endangerment could be filed against those who were in charge of watching the kids at the pool.
