WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita State scored seven runs in the first inning on the way to a 12-4 win over Stephen F. Austin.
Tanner Kirk went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run, while Gunnar Troutwine and Chase Rader each had two hits and two RBI.
Starter Clayton McGinness went four innings and gave up three runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Shockers got on the board in the bottom of the first. With two outs, the Shockers collected nine-straight hits to go in front 7-0. Greyson Jenista doubled, Ryan Tinkham tripled, Gunnar Troutwine singled, Luke Ritter singled, Chase Rader doubled, and Alec Bohm, Travis Young, Mikel Mucha and Tanner Kirk singled.
WSU added on in the second inning. Tinkham was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Troutwine doubled him home for an 8-0 lead.
Kirk’s two-run home run increased the lead to 10-0 in the third.
The Lumberjacks scored three in the fourth and added a solo home run from Zach Valenzuela in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-4.
Keenan Eaton walked to lead off the seventh, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch to put the Shocks up 11-4.
A RBI single for Rader extended the lead to 12-4 in the eighth.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., April 1 when they host No. 6 TCU at 6:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
