Purina plant in Wichita faces possible fine of more then $40K

A Wichita plant that manufactures pet food has been cited by OSHA for worker safety violations.

WICHITA, Kan. – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Purina Animal Nutrition in Wichita for multiple workplace safety violations.

In a news release, OSHA said workers at the plant in the 400 block of E. 18th Street were exposed to grain dust explosion hazards, fall hazards and other safety issues.

The OSHA citation said the company failed to implement housekeeping procedures to prevent grain dust accumulation in priority and non-priority areas.  In some areas, the report said more than five inches of dust had accumulated.

OSHA also said workers were exposed to fall hazards of 6 to 10 feet from ladderway floor openings and platforms lacking guardrails.

In addition, OSHA said workers were exposed to dangerous sudden machine starts because the company failed to inspect and test energy control procedures as required by law.

OSHA proposed fining the company $40,200.

Purina Animal Nutrition LLC is a subsidiary of Land O’ Lakes Purina Feed LLC which is based n Gray Summit, Missouri.
