A new study by the National Institutes of Health and Ohio State University argues the amount of caffeine you consume, from either coffee, soda, or energy drinks, could impact having a healthy pregnancy.
The study found that if a woman is taking in 3 or more caffeinated beverages in just one day, her chances of a miscarriage are more likely; but what some doctors say is even more surprising is that the amount of caffeine that the father took in before conception is also impacting their chances of a miscarriage.
For the couples in the study, the increased risk of miscarriage went up by a whopping 70 percent. Dr. Daniel Grow pointed out that their risk of miscarriage was much lower if the couples only had 2 caffeinated drinks per day before pregnancy.
Dr. Grow also said the study links women’s use of multi-vitamins to a lowered risk of miscarriage. “Take multivitamins. In this same study, multivitamin use decreased the miscarriage rate by half. So multivitamins, folic acid, 400 mg a day, good stuff. Exercise, eat well, and take care of yourself.”
To be clear, miscarriages are common; the study points out that roughly 25 to 30 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage.
