WICHITA, Kansas – What started out as a complaint by an inmate at the Sedgwick County jail has led to a jail corporal being arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with an inmate.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said Wednesday afternoon the deputy was booked into the Sedgwick County jail following an alleged incident involving sexual contact that took place at the jail.

“They alleged that there was some sexual contact between a detention corporal and an Inmate at the time was housed inside the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.”

Easter said the incident first came to light when another inmate revealed it to the jail staff on March 25th.

An investigation into the incident began on March 25 and continued through Wednesday when the deputy was interviewed by sheriff’s office investigators.

Easter said when the deputy declined to talk about the incident, he was booked into the on two counts of unlawful sexual relations, and one count of attempted unlawful sexual relations.

Easter said the corporal was assigned to the unit that houses trustees which included females.  That unit handles the jail’s laundry and answers phone calls.

The corporal has been with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since October 2008, and has been a corporal in the jail for about a year-and-a-half.

Easter said the deputy is no longer employed by the sheriff’s office.

There are more people who will be interviewed, including other inmates and employees at the jail, Easter said. He said once the investigation is complete the case will be turned over to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Easter said the victim is no longer in custody at the Sedgwick County jail.
