GERMANTOWN, Md. (AP) — Fire officials in Maryland say eight firefighters were injured in a collapse at a burning town house.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials say the fire broke out in a Germantown home early Monday.

Battalion Chief Kelvin Thomas said by telephone that firefighters received a report that one person was unaccounted for and as they searched inside, the building partially collapsed. Thomas says firefighters were momentarily trapped, but were quickly rescued. He says their injuries ranged from minor to serious and one firefighter remained in the hospital Monday afternoon.

Thomas says the person who was thought to be missing had escaped safely before firefighters arrived.

Thomas says about 120 firefighters responded to the blaze that damaged neighboring homes, displacing three families. He says investigators are trying to determine the cause.
