Mill Valley beats Kapaun Mount Carmel in boys 5A title game

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Cooper Kaifes scored 22 points to lead Mill Valley to an 84-87 overtime win against Kapaun Mount Carmel in the 5A state championship on Saturday.

Mill Valley held a 44-37 lead at halftime, but Kapaun Mount Carmel edged out the Jaguars in the third quarter. A tight fourth quarter sent the game into overtime, where Mill Valley’s free throws helped the team edge out the Crusaders 12-9 in the period.

Kaifes made eight of his nine free throws, though he only sunk two of his nine attempts at 3-pointers. Clayton Holmberg also scored 19 points for the Jaguars.

Christopher Meitzner scored 35 points for Kapaun Mount Carmel, and he made six 3-pointers.
