Man arrested for firing shots near children

An argument over a man's driving led to his being arrested for firing shots near where children were playing.

WICHITA, Kan. (KSN) – A phone call from a woman who witnessed a verbal argument led to the arrest of a man Saturday after he fired several shots into the air near where children were playing.

Wichita Police report the 34-year-old woman witnessed the argument at about 1 p.m. between a 28-year-old man and another person over the man’s driving at about 1 p.m. at the intersection of N. Mathewson and E. Arnold.  The witness told police the man got out of the vehicle he was driving and fired several shots into the air.

Sgt. Steve Yarberry said there were seven children ranging in age from eight to 15 playing basketball nearby when the shots were fired.  In addition, the incident also was witnessed by a 52-year-old person.

Yarberry said after the man fired the shots in the air, he got back into his vehicle and drove away.  As officers were on the scene taking the report of the incident, the man returned to the scene and was taken into custody.

The man was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on eight counts of aggravated assault.

No one was injured in the incident.
