Andover teen delivers 2,000 shoes to kids in need

ANDOVER, Kansas – Amelia Flores is a 17 year old on a mission.

“I was really, really looking to give back to my community,” said Flores.

On Friday, she got to give more than 200 kids brand new shoes.

“The kids here are great. They’re really deserving of it and I’m really excited to be giving them the shoes,” said Flores.

It started with a shoe drive to support Soles 4 Souls. Flores was hoping to collect 2,000 pairs. But in December, Kim Kardashian caught wind of her efforts and offered a hand through Twitter.

“She said, I was breastfeeding, and I saw this little girl who needed some shoes and I could give 1,000 pairs, help me find this girl!” said Flores.

Flores chose to give her portion of the 1,000 shoe donation to Jardine Middle School kids.

“Probably one of the most economically challenged neighborhoods in town,” said Lura Atherly, Jardine Middle School Principal.

“I picked Jardine because I love Jardine, Jardine is always on my heart,” said Flores.

Kids in need of a helping hand applied to get a pair of shoes, then on Friday, they were measured for their shoe size.

And one of the really fun parts of this program is the kids get to come up and pick out the shoes themselves, and there are plenty of styles to choose from.

“It’s not very often that they get to choose something that has their own flare,” said Atherly.

“We’ve been very proud to watch what just one student can do for a community, it’s amazing,” said Amanda Greer, Andover High School Assistant Principal

Amazing, she says, that what started as a relatively small drive has become so much bigger.

“We are no longer collecting shoes! My house is full, my storage unit is full.”

Flores isn’t finished though. She says she’ll of course be collecting again in the future once she has room.
