WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – A 6-year-old Iowa boy is being hailed as a hero after saving his grandfather’s life during an ice fishing trip.

The incident began when Michael Dorn Jr. and his grandpa were ice fishing at George Wyth State Park in Waterloo, Ia.

As it grew dark, it became hard to see, and they decided to head home.

On their way back, Michael’s grandfather fell and became unconscious after hitting his head on the ice.

They were about 150 yards from shore, and the temperature had dipped below zero at the time.

Michael went looking for help, eventually found two other fisherman and told them to call 9-1-1.

Doctors say Michael’s grandfather had a sprained neck and concussion, but things could have been worse without Mickey’s quick thinking.

Michael’s grandfather says he hopes this is a reminder that there are a lot of dangers when on the ice.
