Athletic Director and Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Carole Obermeyer has announced that Friends University will be adding women’s golf and competitive cheer to its roster of existing intercollegiate athletic teams. The University will also be adding a pep band starting in the fall.
“We’re excited to offer these new teams and a pep band to our athletic lineup,” Obermeyer said. “We feel women’s golf will be a nice addition to our other women’s athletic programs, and a competitive cheer team will take that program to a new level. Having a pep band should also create a more lively and supportive atmosphere at our athletic games and for our Falcon fans.”
Obermeyer expects the women’s golf team to begin competing in 2016. She indicated it could take a little longer to gear up for the move to competitive cheer.
“We took some time last summer and fall to study what we wanted to do with our cheerleading program and what it would take to make it a competitive team. Seven KCAC schools have competitive cheer teams. With the addition of our program, it gives the conference a very competitive conference championship,” Obermeyer said.
The Athletic Department has posted job descriptions for coaches for golf and cheer and director of pep band and hopes to hire them soon this spring semester so they can begin recruiting students.
