Coughing spell leads to injury crash in Ellis County

A man who had a coughing spell was injured when he crashed his car in western Kansas.

HAYS, Kan. – A Paradise, Kansas man who had a coughing spell wound up the victim of a one-vehicle crash in Ellis County Thursday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the incident took place about 1:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 183 eight miles north of Interstate 70 in western Kansas.

KHP says the 60-year-old driver was northbound on U.S. 183 when he began coughing and lost control of his 2005 Ford Taurus.  The vehicle drove into the east ditch, struck a culvert and rolled over.  The Patrol says the vehicle came to its rest facing south in the ditch.

The driver was taken to the Hays Medical Center in unknown condition.

Troopers say the man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
