WICHITA, Kansas – A child is in protective custody after police say her mother placed her life in danger late Wednesday.

Police say the child’s mother, 27-year-old Britaney Elkurd, has been arrested. It happened in the 1500 block of Taft around 11:20 p.m.

Elkurd was allegedly driving erratically without headlights on. Once Elkurd was pulled over, the officer noticed she matched a suspect description from a shoplifting that happened at a nearby Walmart.

When the officer asked her to get out of the car, Elkurd sped off leading police on a three-block chase. She eventually ran into a cul-de-sac and hit a curb. That’s when police realized her 2-year-old daughter was in the car unrestrained. She was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, evade and elude and possession of paraphernalia among other things. The child is in police protective custody.
