DERBY, Kansas – Charging toward the end of January, the 9-and-0 Derby varsity girl’s basketball team is ranked as high as second in the state in area polls.
Led by six seniors, the team is coming off a huge overtime win over Heights in the Ark Valley vs. City League basketball series. Freshman Kennedy Brown racked up 18 points and 17 rebounds in the victory. With a lineup filled with talent, many of the players anticipated a dominant start this year.
Derby senior Kenzie Young told KSN, “I kind of expected it, we played really well this summer.”
Head coach Jodie Karsak said, “The credit would definitely have to go to the seniors this year, they’ve been with me.” Karsak added, “I was an assistant my first year when they were freshmen and they’ve bought in since day one and they are just phenomenal leaders. Kennedy Brown she’s a six foot five freshman, she does a lot of things for us, she stands in the paint she’s our rim defender.”
Brown’s mom played for Derby H.S. and also played two years for Michigan State.
