WICHITA, Kan. – A grass fire inside the construction area of the new elephant exhibit at the Sedgwick County Zoo caused no damage to any structures or animals, a zoo spokesperson said Thursday.

Melissa Graham said the fire Thursday was quickly put out by firefighters before it could harm structures in the area.

There’s no information on the cause of the fire or how long it took to extinguish it.

Graham said information from the zoo’s horticulture department indicates that grass will grow again in the area damaged by the fire.

The zoo’s plans to open the new elephant exhibit are still on track to take place over the Memorial Day weekend.
