First court appearance for Wichita teacher charged with child sex crimes

GARDEN CITY, Kansas – Former Garden City Community College instructor and current Wichita Public Schools teacher, Steven Thompson made his first appearance in court on Thursday.

He has been charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a child.

The charges follow a two-year investigation after Garden City Police discovered child pornography on his work computer and several other devices.

Thompson resigned from his Garden City Community College position in February 2014 and was hired by Wichita Public Schools in August of 2015.

Right now, Thompson is on paid leave from his position as a math teacher at Northeast Magnet High School.

He’s out of jail on a $7,500 bond.
