Worker rescued after more than 12 hours in trench

OAKLAND, Calif. – A California plumbing contractor is safe after being trapped more than 12 hours in a drainage trench.

The worker was working on a sewer line in front of a home Tuesday afternoon when the trench collapsed on him.

Rescue crews worked throughout the night to get him out, but a mix of sand, mud and clay hindered rescue efforts.

He was originally found 10-feet underground and waist-deep in mud. During the rescue attempt, crews were able to send pain medication to him inside the trench.

He was freed early Wednesday morning.
