MANHATTAN, Kansas – After posting strong marks at last weekend’s Wildcat Invitational, senior Akela Jones has been named the USTFCCCA Division I National Female Athlete of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Jones set a personal best in high jump at the Wildcat Invitational with a mark of 1.87m/6-01.50 and fell just short of her personal best in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.17. She went on to take first place in both events and both marks finished as national bests.
The St. Michael, Barbados native was also recognized earlier this month by the USTFCCCA as she was named to the 2016 Preseason Bowerman Trophy watch list, making her the first Wildcat to be named the award’s watch list since its creation in 2009.
K-State returns to action on Friday as it travels to Lawrence, Kansas, to compete in the KSU-KU-WSU Showdown at Anschutz Sports Pavilion. Field events are set to begin at 3 p.m. CT, followed by track events at 5 p.m. CT.
Fans will also have the opportunity to watch Jones compete at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on January 23 and 24. Jones opens competition that Friday at 10 a.m. CT as she participates in the Austra Skujyte Women’s Pentathlon and goes after the Indoor Collegiate record in the event.
