Chase with robbery suspects ends in crash in south Wichita

WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police say a chase with robbery suspects  ended in a crash with another car. It happened at Harry and Broadway around 11:22 a.m.

Police say three people were seriously injured, including the two suspects.

Officials say the chase started after they were tracking suspects related to a robbery that occurred in the 2100 block of North Woodlawn on Monday.  The suspects stole a purse, money and lottery tickets from the business.  Police along with lottery officials worked to track the suspects who were cashing in tickets this morning in the 2100 block of South Broadway.

Lt. James Espinoza with the Wichita Police Department says the suspects refused to stop when a marked patrol car pulled up.

A short pursuit ensued for about five blocks, until the suspects vehicle crashed into another car at the intersection of Broadway and Harry.

David Hensley was out running errands for his business and got a clear look at how the chase ended.

“By the time I pull my car over and I get out, all the cops have converged on this other car and they’re drawing down on the driver and the passenger in the vehicle,” said Hensley.

At the same time, Hensley says officers were headed towards the other car.

“Another police officer ran all the way up to this Ford, just to see if this innocent driver was okay, and that’s when I walked over to see if I could assist, I was really concerned, the guy was non responsive at all,” said Hensley.

The two suspects were transported to an area hospital.

The driver in the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported as well.

Lt. Espinoza says the intersction will be closed for an undetermined amount of time.
