WICHITA, Kansas — For the second time in the last month Wichita State point guard, Fred VanVleet has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
The senior from Rockford, Ill. helped the Shockers seize early control of the MVC race with wins over co-leaders Evansville and Southern Illinois – two teams that entered the week with a combined 26-4 record.
VanVleet has been player of the week twice this season (the last coming on Dec. 14) and has won the award four times in his Shocker career.
Over the two games he averaged 11.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals, while fashioning a 5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Against Evansville, VanVleet piled up a season-high nine assists to go with 16 points. He grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in the win at SIU and dished out six assists without a turnover. On Saturday, VanVleet became just the second player in MVC history to reach 1,000-points, 500-assists and 400-rebounds.
WSU (10-5, 4-0 MVC) earned seven votes in Monday’s Associated Press Poll. The first-place Shockers travel to Missouri State (6-10, 2-2 MVC) for an 8 p.m. CT tip on Cox Channel Kansas.
