GARDEN CITY, Kansas – The Finney County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to a suicidal subject with a gun in northeast Finney County on Sunday night. The incident happened at 21555 Eddie Road.

As deputies were responding to the area, they were advised that an off-duty Finney County Sheriff’s Deputy who lives in the area was contacted by neighbors and also was responding. The sheriff’s department says the deputy drove his personal vehicle to the address and parked his vehicle in the drive way. That is when 23-year-old man then exited his home and approached the deputy with a gun. The deputy fired two shots from his handgun, striking the man once in the leg. The deputy and the neighbors from the area provided first aid until Finney County EMS was able to transport him to St. Catherine’s Hospital for medical treatment.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident. The deputy is on paid administrative leave pending KBI’s investigation
