HUTCHINSON, Kansas – Firefighters in Hutchinson rescued horses that were trapped in a barn that collapsed on Sunday afternoon.

Hutchinson Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeremy Unruh said in a news release, crews responded to the call of the collapsed barn shortly after 2:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of N. Harding St.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered a 20′ X 15′ barn had blown about 15 feet off its foundation, pinning four ponies inside.

Crews used the Jaws of Life to lift the structure off of the animals.

One pony was able to free itself, but the remaining three had to be removed by the firefighters.

Unruh said the ponies were transferred to the care of the owner’s veterinarian. Their conditions are not known at this time.
