HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) – Kyle Busch opened the Sprint Cup season in a hospital bed, and he’s ended it with his first championship.
Busch has won the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to claim the Sprint Cup title. He moved past Brad Keselowski on the final restart with seven laps to go in the 400-mile race.
Busch took the championship despite breaking his right leg and left foot before the Daytona 500, leading to multiple surgeries and causing him to miss the first 11 races of the season. NASCAR granted him a waiver to race for the championship if he earned a berth in the playoffs, and he did it by winning four of five races at midseason.
Kevin Harvick finished second in the race and second in the championship standings. Jeff Gordon took third overall in his final season as a driver.
