Salvation Army giving away cold weather items

WICHITA, Kansas – As winter slowly heads our way, the Salvation Army is preparing to help others in need. Wednesday and Thursday, they’ll be giving away coats, sweaters, and more for free for people in need.

Many of these items were donated back in January and then professionally cleaned. The giveaway is a nationwide effort through the Salvation Army.

Locally, officials say last year they gave away 4,000 items to 2,000 people, and they’re hoping to top that this year. While there are many items in stock right now, there is still a need for more donations.

“Especially need winter hats and gloves and mittens and our greatest need probably would be for children’s coats and extra large sizes in coats for adults,” said Major Joseph Wheeler with the Salvation Army.

This begins at 9:30 in the morning going until 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. It’s all free of charge, all people need to bring is the proof of the number of people living in their home.

Those interested in donating items or cash can bring it to the Salvation Army at 350 N. Market Street in downtown Wichita.
