Ex-Derby educator accused of sexual relations with student

DERBY, Kansas – A former Derby Public Schools paraprofessional has been arrested on suspicion of unlawful sexual relations with a student.

According to Sedgwick County arrest sheets, the woman is identified as 36-year-old Melanie Lynn Pratt.

Derby Police Chief Robert Lee said the woman was arrested Thursday. Authorities believe the incident happened between April and May at Derby High School. According to Lee, the suspect is currently not employed by the school district.

Derby Superintendent Craig Wilford said an investigation is underway. Wilford says the paraprofessional had resigned prior to any knowledge of the reported incident.

A school district alert sent to parents.

A former Derby High School paraprofessional was arrested Thursday afternoon on allegations of criminal activity. The individual arrested resigned from Derby Public Schools well before any allegations were made to the school district or law enforcement. We will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure we have accurate information and to ensure that our students remain safe at school.”
